Digitising Svalbard’s Geology: the Festningen Digital Outcrop Model

چکیده

The renowned Festningen section in the outer part of Isfjorden, western Spitsbergen, offers a c. 7 km-long nearly continuous stratigraphic Lower Carboniferous to Cenozoic strata, spanning 300 million years geological history. Tectonic deformation associated with Paleogene West-Spitsbergen-Fold-and-Thrust belt tilted strata near-vertical, allowing easy access along shoreline. is regionally important reference profile, and thus key locality for any geologist visiting Svalbard. lithology variations, dinosaur footprints, many fossil groups, record more than continental drift, climate change, sea level variations. In addition, only natural geoscientific monument protected by law (i.e. geotope) this contribution, we present digital outcrop model (DOM) processed from 3762 drone photographs. resulting high-resolution detail down 7.01 mm, covers an area 0.8 km2 can be freely accessed via Svalbox database. Through Svalbox, also put regional context comparing it nearby offshore seismic, exploration boreholes penetrating same stratigraphy publications on deep-time paleoclimate trends recorded at Festningen.

Outcrop Geology of Plio-Pleistocene Strata of the Confidence Hills, Southern Death Valley, California

The Confidence Hills, Southern Death Valley, California, are composed of Plio-Pleistocene lacustrine beds, evaporite beds, ashes, playa sediments, alluvial fan and fluvial deposits. The sediments have been divided into 5 mappable units. From oldest to, youngest, they are: the Confidence Hills "formation" (informal) composed of three interfingering members, and overlying Units A and B which do n...

Digitising Aegean Bronze Age Buildings: Building Typologies from Digital Plans

How and why did people living in the Aegean region over 3,000 years ago construct their buildings in the manner that they did? By having access to digital building plans our understanding of building techniques used in the region during this era can be improved. The application of digital spatial analyses to determine what could be possible reasons why certain materials and dimensions were used...

Outcrop fracture characterization on suppositional planes cutting through digital outcrop models (DOMs)

Conventional fracture data collection methods are usually implemented on planar surfaces or assuming they are planar; these methods may introduce sampling errors on uneven outcrop surfaces. Consequently, data collected on limited types of outcrop surfaces (mainly bedding surfaces) may not be a sufficient representation of fracture network characteristic in outcrops. Recent development of techni...

Inner Model Theoretic Geology

One of the basic concepts of set theoretic geology is the mantle of a model of set theory V: it is the intersection of all grounds of V, that is, of all inner models M of V such that V is a set-forcing extension of M . The main theme of the present paper is to identify situations in which the mantle turns out to be a fine structural extender model. The first main result is that this is the case...

Digitising the Domestic/Domesticating The Digital: The Home as Virtual Space

The concept of “home” is of central and universal importance to humanity. This paper argues that information and communication technologies (ICTs) are now inextricably bound up with our concept of home and that they have helped render it a virtual space. In fact, home has always been a virtual s pace in the sense that it has existed in the imagination at the same time as it has been associated ...
